If you want to avoid hundreds if not thousands of dollars in vet bills there is one BIG risk factor for many diseases that you need to consider! That is your pets weight! Currently over 50% of pets in the US are overweight or obese.
Too many calories and not enough exercise can pack a few pounds on pets and that puts our furry friends at greater risk of developing health problems. Luckily, many obesity related diseases can be delayed or prevented by keeping pets in a healthy weight range!
Pets that weigh 10 to 20% more than their ideal body weight are considered overweight, and pets that weigh over 20% above normal are considered obese. One of the biggest problems is, that it is hard to recognize when a pet is overweight, because the ideal weight picture that we have in our mind does look more like the “heavy” dog in the image! Your veterinarian can help you assess your pet’s body condition score and see if weight loss is necessary.
In the next few posts we will be discussing the reasons why it is so important to keep your four-legged family members lean and trim!
